What is your Leadership Style?

Leadership styles refer to the specific behaviors and actions that leaders engage in to influence and motivate their followers. Different approaches to leadership can be used depending on the team, the situation, and the leader’s philosophy and experience.

Leaders should take the time to understand the various leadership styles and choose the one that best fits teams, goals and situations.

Daniel Goleman’s research has identified six leadership styles, which stem from distinct aspects of Emotional Intelligence:

  • Coercive/Commanding: Utilizes a top-down approach, relying on authority and control to drive immediate compliance.
  • Authoritative/Visionary: Provides clear direction and guidance while inspiring confidence and motivation in others.
  • Affiliative: Prioritizes building strong relationships and fostering a sense of belonging within the team.
  • Democratic: Encourages active participation and input from team members in decision-making processes.
  • Pacesetting: Exemplifying high standards of performance and expecting others to follow suit, often leading by example.
  • Coaching: Focused on developing individuals’ skills and capabilities through personalized guidance and feedback.
